The Guadalentín athletics track will be called Antonio Peñalver Asensio (03/05/2019)

In the ordinary Plenary of April all the political groups of the municipal Corporation have approved to grant the denomination of the track of athletics with the name of 'Antonio Peñalver Asensio'.

Peñalver began to practice sports through the streets of Alhama de Murcia and the trails of Sierra Espuña.

In 1985 he won the Spanish long jump championship, and the following year the titles in height, shot put and pole vault in the junior category, establishing himself as one of the most promising figures in Spanish athletics.

But, undoubtedly, 1992 was the peak year of Antonio Peñalver in the elite of international athletics.

In that legendary season, he won the bronze in the heptathlon of the European Indoor Championships, held in Genoa, and made the most important feat of his career: the silver of Barcelona '92.

In 2006 he was in charge of the creation of the 3 Molinos Resort cycling team, promoted by a construction company from Murcia.

From 2007 to 2015 he was General Director of Sports of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

There were many who wanted to join the tribute that the City Council organized for the 25th anniversary of the decathlon silver medal in the Olympic Games of Barcelona 92 last October 2017, in which a commemorative mural was discovered in the Guadalentín sports complex to this great local athlete.

Almost 27 years after Antonio Peñalver achieved this achievement, the City Council decided to give him one more recognition: to give his name to the athletics track.

"A tartan in which so many hours passed and in which, now, he enjoys teaching young people who see him as an example in which to look at himself," the motion emphasizes.
