The City Council renews its agreement with the foundation Ntra. Sra. De los Desamparados for the cession of the Ecological Gardens (04/07/2019)

The mayor of Alhama, Mariola Guevara, and the parish priest José Prior have signed a new collaboration agreement between the City Council and Our Lady of the Forsaken: Fundación Vidal-Abarca for the cession of the land destined for the Family Ecological Gardens during the next two years.

The objective of the agreement is to collaborate in the promotion of leisure activities and free time in the municipality that are respectful with the environment, which serve to raise awareness and educate in respect to it and to recover the traditions of Alhama.

The initial agreement dates back to April 1, 2012, in which both entities fixed the transfer of part of the property, property of the aforementioned foundation, to promote ecological farming activities without profit, facilitating self-consumption and fulfilling a educational purpose for the schools of the municipality.

In addition to attending the activities of the Department of Environment and the maintenance needs of the Spirituality House of the foundation.

The Family Ecological Gardens are located in El Ral, and have an area of ​​more than 9,000 m2, which includes an irrigation reservoir and an area for composting, collection of materials and other utilities of this agricultural activity.

Its destination, organic farming, is characterized by maintaining the fertility of the land, not applying chemical products not from natural sources, or using genetically modified organisms.

The City Council of Alhama has been in charge of preparing the land and dividing it, as well as the access and parking area, as well as installing the irrigation system and the perimeter fence.

The agreement also establishes maintenance actions around the house, including clearing, pruning the trees and caring for their gardens.

Among the activities that are the subject of this space include:

· Talks, debates, orientation and training workshops on agroecology, food, health and environmental education.

· Workshops on the Family Ecological Garden.

· Exhibition and / or gastronomic encounters for the tasting of homemade recipes made with organic products.

· Didactic visits to the gardens, including practical activities according to the season: sowing, tillage, harvesting, etc., all in collaboration with schools and youth associations.

· Activities related to ecology free of charge, that complement the religious activities that are organized in the housing of the farm.

· Sensitization activities that convey the importance of respect for the environment.

A sample of this is the Harvest Fair, which this 2019 has reached its seventh edition, or the days of coexistence of users and heads of the Municipal Psychosocial Care Center, among others.
