The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and the mayor of Alhama de Murcia, José Swords, today inaugurated the expansion of the sewage of the municipality to increase by 50 percent its treatment capacity, going from 5,400 cubic meters per day 7,900.

The plant will recover up to two hectometres of water per year to be reused.

The owner of Agriculture and Water said that the expansion of the sewage treatment plant "meets the needs of real population growth and future."

The work consisted of giving the plant a new parallel line biological treatment, strengthen and expand the tertiary system for sludge treatment.

According to Cerda, this treatment plant "has converted the old impoundment in a wetland suitable for the birds."

"He credited the presence of very significant waterfowl such as White-headed Duck," said the counselor.

Environmental safety conditions have been strengthened and has fostered the tertiary treatment system to improve the quality of treated water which encourages the maintenance of this habitat.

The work has involved an investment of 2.3 million euros, financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union by 80 percent and equity of the region.

This action is part of the General Plan of drainage and water treatment that has endowed the municipalities in the region of large treatment plants and aims in this new phase to reach one hundred per cent of small towns.
