Spain will experience a major event of great significance for the entire Catholic Church as Pope Benedict XVI comes to Madrid to head the World Youth Day.
Alhama has not been left out of the event and the Church represented by the parishes of the municipality is working in the organization.
Specifically, the region is home these days more than 3,500 pilgrims from five continents to attend the day which will take place from 16 to 21 this month.
To Alhama, 57 pilgrims have come from Slovenia to spend some days in our town and have been welcomed by local families.
The City Council, along with their instructors, guides and other stakeholders, has received this morning at the Plenary Hall of the Consistory Local.
Carmen Maria Rodriguez, Acting Mayor, accompanied by the mayors of Sports, Lola Canovas Staff, Angela Sanchez and Social Welfare, M ª Carmen Díaz, has been commissioned to welcome them.
The City Council has worked with the church organizing visits to the municipality as well as enjoy free swimming pool.
In his welcoming speech, the mayor in office pointed out that this host "we offer you the chance to spend a time of fellowship, a rapprochement of cultures in an atmosphere of friendship and prayer in preparation for World Youth Day."
He also wanted visitors to "enjoy your stay in our town and that this is a beginning of a rewarding journey for all."
The event ended with the delivery to the pilgrims of a gift with county and state.
Also, the Slovenians have been delivered to representatives of the government team memorabilia and souvenirs of their visit to their country of origin.
They have also entertained the town with some of the songs on this important day.
