The Covenant of Mayors to reduce the consumption of CO2 leads to the mayor to Greece to participate in a conference organized by the European Union (08/11/2011)

During this week, the mayor of the municipality, Fernando Alfonso Ceron, has traveled to the Greek island of Crete where a meeting takes place in the municipalities and regions of the European Union as part of the MEDEA project, agreement Mediterranean regions are part of the Covenant of Mayors.

On January 27, 2011 the Plenum of the Corporation unanimously agreed by the municipality accession to the Covenant of Mayors, European-wide agreement that aims to fight for a local sustainable energy, through the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Among the commitments of this agreement, is to promote in each municipality to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20%, and submit a Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy.

At present there are about 10% of municipalities in Spain adhered to this pact, but in the region of Murcia are 36 of the 45 municipalities that are attached.

Once Alhama joined the Covenant of Mayors, the Energy Management Agency of the Region of Murcia (ARGEM) (created to promote regional development in a sustainable way, respecting the environment through various objectives), promoted a call to select 8 municipalities in the region who were interested and who met the conditions for participating in the European project MEDEA, an initiative approved by the European Commission which aims to implement the European Energy Awerd tool (EEA) for the development and implementation of municipal energy plans.

Alhama he applied and was selected among the eight locations thanks to the various projects that had developed the municipality (municipal energy audit, the replacement of incandescent traffic light lenses other LED type, the installation of alternative energy use in buildings city, the Bicycle Master Plan, the Auto Loan System Bicialhama Bicycles called ...., etc).

In this framework, the 8th and November 9th place in the island of Crete a meeting of the municipalities Medeea project, an island that created a state agency that sets Crete as a preferential area for implementing renewable energy .

At the meeting, which is funded entirely by the EU, are held several conferences and meetings that aim to plan the energy consumption locally and regionally, and share experiences from the various regions involved.

The mayor, who will return next Thursday afternoon, attended along with representatives of the other eight municipalities in the region that are part of Medeea ARGEM and a representative who will present at the meeting the region's experience with the installation of solar systems modeled thermal ESCO.
