The family of Alfonso Martinez-Mena valuable property bequeathed to the City one of the foremost writers on the national scene (14/05/2012)

The writer

Alfonso Martinez-Mena Rodriguez was born in Alhama de Murcia in 1931.

His professional resume is extensive, began studying law in Murcia, and Salamanca, and later held a doctorate in Madrid, where he spent his student days, during these years he studied journalism and then worked in the Ministry of Culture in Madrid.

He was director of a radio program devoted to the letters on Radio Popular de Madrid, and also worked in the newspaper "People" and "ABC" and in the journals "Journal S. P", "Journal S. P" and "Amphora Nova" and as a literary critic in other journals intellectual level.

For his long Alfonso Martinez-Mena has become one of the most famous writers of literature at regional and national levels.

Throughout his life he has received numerous awards, more than fifty, that support the work of this writer, giving prestige and an outstanding reputation among other writers of the time.

In his role as a novelist was awarded the "Child of", "City of Barbastro", "City of Murcia" and "Antonio Machado" among others.

As a writer of short stories was awarded the "Sesame", 1965, "Gabriel Mirķ", 1967 "Spanish Family," 1968, "Savings Bank of Lion," 1968, "Golden Piggy Bank," 1969; "Benidorm" 1972, or "Francisco Garcia Pavon," in 1975, and most recently in 2008 with the award Clarin.

"I know your life, John", 1969, narrative that delves into the world of surrealism, and taking their first steps on the ground of the novella.

In the seventies, Martinez-Mena wrote three long novels are: "The Vermin", 1971, which tells the tragic story of a rural town, "Introit to Hope" and "clashing cymbal", both published in 1982.

His stories have appeared in numerous national and international anthologies.

In 2006 the town of Alhama de Murcia paid tribute to this writer, at his home by placing a plaque in honor of the 44 years of "The Mirror of Narcissus" story in which the author recalls his childhood in the town of Alhama also opened a street in the town that bears his name.

Martinez-Mena, very rooted to their homeland, launched in conjunction with the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Alhama in 2000, the Literary Short Story Contest "Alfonso Martinez-Mena," international contest, which came to to promote the short story, a genre that emphasizes the writer, and from which twelve editions have already been made.

The event which takes place on an annual basis, has become one of the most prestigious awards of stories on the national scene becoming a benchmark for either professional writers or amateurs, from all corners of Spain and many countries Latin America and around the world to unleash their imagination and fantasy, addressing issues of the most diverse and the only requirement not to exceed eight pages long and that the stories are unpublished.

In 2012 was awarded the highest participation to date, making a total of 1139 participants from all points of the map.

Alfonso Martinez-Mena Rodriguez left us on February 24, 2010, at age 81, but his literary work and his memory will remain forever.
