Ecologists in Action claims planting a prohibited species in Condado de Alhama (18/03/2015)

Members of Ecologists in Action Murcia Region have reported to the Directorate General of Environment which has planted more than 3,000 plants from dangerous invasive alien species known as Pennisetum setaceum in roundabouts and landscaped area between urbanization "Condado de Alhama "Highway RM-23 (Highway Alhama-Mazarron) as part of the landscaping of urbanization in the hamlet of Las Cañadas, town of Alhama de Murcia.

The environmental organization pointed out that the law expressly prohibits the planting of Pennisetum setaceum in the natural environment, including linear transport infrastructure and roads, as expressed by the first Transitional provision for species in ornamental nurseries.

Environmentalists also claim that the place where the events are reported is a particularly sensitive area because it is in the drainage basin of Protected Natural Area "The Saladares of Guadalentin", which is also part of the Natura2000 Network under the figure Site of Community Importance (SCI).

The fact that planting is adjacent to agricultural areas that maintain margins and boundaries, can help these margins serve as a vector for the spread of Pennisetum, both downstream and up.

The organization is aware of the difficulties and high costs that would eradicate this pest species if extended by the natural environment, has requested the urgent removal of planted specimens, and that are currently in a period of flowering and maturation seeds that are dispersed by the wind.

They also call for further follow-up is made to ensure the total disappearance of propagules of species and planting native species of the genus Stipa (spelled), which hinder the resurgence of invasive species.

Finally, the organization has requested that identify responsibilities and adequately punish this offense, given the environmental and economic consequences related to the dispersal of this species in the wild.
