Alhama pact adds to energy efficiency to combat climate change (15/01/2016)

Alhama de Murcia is one of eight municipalities in the region that supports the Covenant of Mayors, promoted by the Instituto de Fomento Region de Murcia (INFO) for energy audits in the city, along with those of Albudeite, Totana, San Javier, Ceuta, Sewer, Eagles and Abarán.

The mayor, Diego Conesa, has signed an agreement at the Ministry of Development, together with representatives of other municipalities mentioned, in order to reduce the annual energy bill by more than 4.5 million, a saving of consumption energy of at least 40% and reduction of CO2 emissions of over 6,000 tons.

The Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Employment, Juan Hernandez Albarracín, and the mayors of Albudeite, Totana, San Javier, Ceuta, Sewer, Aguilas and Alhama de Murcia Abarán have signed agreements to promote an investment of over 16 million euros in the implementation of various energy saving measures that will allow further progress in the fight against climate change.

Specifically, through these agreements the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia agrees to hire an energy audit whose cost will be financed by the European Investment Bank by 90 percent, while the remaining 10 percent will be provided by each municipality, which also takes on the commitment to make the necessary tenders to carry out most of the recommendations and actions to bring the respective audit.

The development of energy audits are part of the European Project Elena-Fuensanta, which aims to encourage the government to invest in actions and initiatives that contribute to greater energy efficiency and promoting renewable energies.

With an ambitious quantitative target, such as reaching the mobilization of a bidding amount of just over 32 million euros in actions on energy efficiency through December of this year (can surely be extended another 3 months to March 2017), including actions by both of our municipalities, like other public bodies in our region.

As measures to implement are those concerning improvement of indoor lighting installations and public lighting of streets, avenues and squares of the municipalities;

improving management of energy consumption;

creation of an electronic manager to centralize and monitor consumption for periodic checks;

improved air conditioning systems in buildings;

promotion of energy saving systems and water;

promotion of thermal and photovoltaic solar energy as well as promoting use of biofuels or presence of hybrid and electric vehicles in municipal fleets.

Public authorities, in particular municipalities, will be aimed to lead the fight against climate change.

The municipalities in the region must be sustainable to achieve the 20-20-20 objective, which advocates in 2020 to 20 percent reduction in energy consumption, 20 percent reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases and to encourage the use of at least 20 percent renewable energy.

The adopted measures shall be, in these municipalities signatories, savings in annual energy bill of over 4.5 million, a saving in energy consumption of at least 40% and reduce CO2 emissions to the atmosphere of more than 6,000 tons a year. "
