Today April 22 is celebrated internationally on "Earth Day". (22/04/2008)

Alhama City Council points out that today, April 22 is Earth Day, a holiday celebrated in many countries.

Its sponsor, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, established this day to create awareness to the problems of pollution, conservation of biodiversity and other environmental concerns to protect the Earth.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day, celebrated internationally for the first time on April 22, 1970, to highlight the need for conservation of natural resources in the world.

Student movement emerged as the Earth Day has become an important educational and informative event.

Environmental groups use it as an opportunity to assess global environmental problems: pollution of air, water and soil, destruction of ecosystems, the hundreds of thousands of plant and animal species depleted, and depletion of nonrenewable resources.

We insist on solutions to eliminate the negative effects of human activities.

These solutions include the recycling of manufactured materials, preservation of natural resources such as oil and energy, the prohibition of the use of chemicals harmful to the destruction of critical habitats such as rainforests and endangered species protection.

For that reason is Earth Day.

"The Earth is our home and the home of all living things. The earth itself is alive. We are part of an evolving universe. We are members of a community of interdependent life with a magnificent diversity of life forms and cultures. We humbled by the beauty of the earth and share a reverence for life and the sources of our being ... "

Earth Day aimed at raising awareness of Earth's natural resources and their management, environmental education, and participation as environmentally conscious and responsible citizens.

In short, the Earth Day is a day for all for reflection and awareness that the Earth is truly a work of art that demonstrates daily the value of all its elements and that we must take care because it also is a delicate system that requires our attention.
