The Mayor of the town, José Espadas Lopez, participated last Friday 28th May at the Citizen Participation Workshop on Model Forest Espuña promoted by the Directorate General of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity.
The event, which took place at the "Ricardo Codorniu", were invited various social agents involved in the management and conservation, not only Espuña but also from the mountains of Mula and Cehegín.
More than thirty participants from various organizations and municipalities in the area could learn from the Director Technical Espuña Park, Mario Velamazán, and the Head of the Regional Office of Protected Areas, Andrés Muñoz, the current state of work filing of the application of these forests to be declared as Model Forest.
The model forest idea was developed in Canada in order to promote integrated and sustainable management of forest resources, growth and conservation through the practice of participation and consensus.
For this there is a Model Forest Network (IMFN) that has gradually extend to other continents.
In Europe the first statement of this figure holds an area of Soria, Urbión forest.
In the case of being accepted Espuña and Mule Mountains and this would be the second Cehegín Model Forest in Europe.
The process of public participation and consensus in Murcia started making his own candidacy Espuña to join this network.
Numerous meetings with different social groups and authorities have been held so far, the result of which the General Directorate prepared a complete list of action items for implementation within the next few years if the nomination is thriving.
The Mayor accompanied by the headman of Gebas and El Berro Municipal Technical and Environment, participated in various working groups set up to highlight the priorities of the proposed action.
The actions selected by the process involved serve to complete the extensive dossier that will definitely serve to present the candidature of Murcia during the month of June.
