The abundant rains that occurred in the Region of Murcia last week and the maintenance of still summer temperatures, give rise to the ideal circumstances for numerous accumulations of water to occur and, in them, different species of mosquitoes, including The common and the tiger.
Therefore, the Councilor for the Environment, Antonio Espinosa, explained today a series of recommendations, in many cases obligations, so that among all the neighbors can stop the reproduction of these mosquitoes in water accumulations:
1. Cover all containers (buckets, basins, planters, vases, ashtrays, wheels, toys, etc.) that have accumulated water and are needed for later use.
2. Empty any container of any kind that has accumulated water and that cannot be covered, paying special attention to the dishes under the pots.
Do not forget also the plastics sometimes accumulated in patios or plots, which can retract enough water between their folds to favor the mosquito's biological cycle.
3. Change the water in the beverage containers for companion animals every 24 hours.
4. Eliminate retained water in drainage or drainage channels, such as those that exist on roofs, terraces or balconies.
5. Empty the inflatable plastic pools if they will not be used.
If so, treat its waters periodically to avoid the deposition or hatching of mosquito eggs.
6. On rustic farms, avoid water accumulations on terraces, pipes, ditches, siphons, splitters and other irrigation structures.
In the event that these accumulations occur, their waters should be treated to avoid the appearance of adult insects as explained below.
7. Also in rustic farms you have to cover holes in trunks and tree branches that could accumulate water.
This can be done with dirt or sand.
8. In areas where there is no choice but to accumulate water (reservoirs, rafts, balsons, siphons, deposits, etc.), protective meshes must be installed that prevent the access of mosquitoes or carry out periodic larvicidal treatments.
For this, the most effective is to use biological means by inoculating Bacillus thuringiensis.
As in any product, there are several trademarks that supply it, basically in two formats, liquid or solid, in the latter case normally in granules.
Since the continued use of the same insecticide ends up causing resistance in the mosquito that we try to control, it is advised to alternate it with Bacillus sphaericus.
9. To all these indications we must add the self-protection measures that we all must adopt, such as wearing clothes that cover the whole body, that is not tight (the mosquitoes can get through it) and that has a certain thickness in the fabric.
10. It is also recommended to use mosquito repellents during the hours of greatest exposure, especially at late afternoon.
If the presence of a tiger mosquito is detected, these protectors must be specific for this species, otherwise they will not be effective.
In this case, it should be borne in mind that these products cannot be used with children under 2 years of age and that it must be done with caution in children under 14, avoiding especially their application in hands, mouth and mucous membranes.
