Katia Díaz presents her book 'Returning home with diabetes' (17/01/2020)

Today, Friday, January 17 at 8:00 p.m., writer Katia Díaz will present her book 'Returning home with diabetes' at the Los Baños archeological museum, a personal account that aims to help other parents who are in the same situation.

The work tells its story as the mother of an 8-year-old boy who was diagnosed with constant severe hypoglycemia, with which he had to learn to live and cope normally.

10 years later, Katia recounts how her evolution was and how she and her family faced this disease.

The author will talk about her experience and give information on the topic of diabetes in the presentation, which will be moderated by the communicator, Salva López, and the specialist in psychiatry and regional deputy, José Antonio Peñalver.

What is the diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that appears when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin it produces.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar.

The effect of uncontrolled diabetes is hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar), which over time severely damages many organs and systems, especially nerves and blood vessels.

In 2014, 8.5% of adults (18 years or older) had diabetes.

In 2015, 1.6 million people died as a direct result of diabetes and high blood glucose levels were the cause of another 2.2 million deaths in 2012.

What are the frequent consequences of diabetes?

Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.

Adults with diabetes have a 2 to 3 times greater risk of myocardial infarction and stroke.

Neuropathy of the feet combined with reduced blood flow increases the risk of foot ulcers, infection and, ultimately, amputation.

Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness and is the consequence of the damage of the small blood vessels of the retina that accumulates over time.

2.6% of global cases of blindness are a consequence of diabetes.

Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure.
