This year the godfather of the winners will be the Ghanaian Ousman Umar, a surviving emigrant who arrived in Spain by patera in 2005. The story of Umar begins in Ghana (he does not know his exact birth date) in 1992. With 13 years he crossed the Sahara to standing and saw the vast majority of his fellow travelers die dehydrated.
With 16, he saw his best friend drowning when the patera with which he tried to reach Europe sank.
At 17 he arrived in Barcelona without knowing a word of Spanish, without knowing or reading or writing.
No money, no friends, nothing.
He slept for several months lying on the street, until a family from Barcelona received him.
Umar combined his studies with a job in a bicycle shop, where he applied the knowledge he had acquired in Ghana, and from which he was able to obtain a work permit and fully regularize his administrative situation in Spain.
Today Ousman has a mother, a father and three adoptive brothers in Barcelona, two university degrees, a master's degree, an NGO, an UN award, photos with Pope Francis and a 222-page book entitled 'Journey to the country of whites '(Plaza and Janés) in which he narrates the misadventures he has been through throughout his life.
The event will also feature the live performance of the professional Alhameño percussionist Javier Vidal, who will perform the works 'Blues for Gilbert' and 'Asventuras for Snare Drum'.
