UGT deeply regrets the death this morning of a 40-year-old worker in a carpentry company in the Alhama de Murcia Industrial Estate, as a result of a work accident. In the absence of knowing the specific data of the relevant investigation, and according to the latest data provided by the Institute for Occupational Health and Safety of the Region of Murcia, the accident occurred when the worker tried to unbolt a milling machine had stuck.
The event occurred around 07.14 in the morning, and despite the efforts of his colleagues who have tried to dismantle the machine, and the quick assistance of the emergency services and firefighters, nothing could be done to save his life. From the UGT we regret that recklessness takes away health and in this case the lives of workers, and also that in times of economic crisis prevention has less observance in companies. We also hope that the Health and Safety Institute (ISSL) and the 112 Service have initiated the Protocol for care in the event of an occupational accident with fatalities, which was approved within the Occupational Health and Safety Strategy of the Region of Murcia 2019- 2022.
The purpose of the protocol is to quickly and effectively activate the psychological assistance that family members, co-workers, and the employer himself may require with respect to people who die in work accidents in the territorial scope of the Region of Murcia. This protocol is one of the many tools that must be known by companies and workers to have active training in occupational risk prevention.
The UGT demands that the Regional Government allocate more and better personal, material and technological resources to the ISSL so that it can serve as an effective instrument for the training and information of companies and workers.
