Regarding what happened last Saturday, January 16, in the Parish of San Lzaro de Alhama de Murcia, the Bishopric of Cartagena states the following: 1.- The diocesan Church, since the beginning of this Covid-19 pandemic, lives with great concern and responsibility the epidemiological situation of our Region, maintaining a fluid dialogue with the health authorities and actively collaborating in the fight against the transmission of the virus. 2.- Last September, in the effort to collaborate for the prevention of the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a Covid-19 Coordinator was appointed so that, taking into account all the legislation That both the Government of the Nation and the Regional, adapt said legislation to the pastoral and liturgical life of the parishes and delegations of the Diocese of Cartagena. 3.- Last Friday, January 15, the Covid-19 Coordinator of the Diocese of Cartagena drew up some considerations where he updated the prevention measures with the President's Decree 4/2021 of January 14, taking into account that the limitation to "social, family and recreational gatherings" do not affect the liturgical and pastoral life of the Church, since these are properly regulated. 4.- At the present time, the entire Diocese is under the prevention measures of the extreme alert level, that is, in terms of the capacity of places of worship, 50% of the capacity of the temples (Decree of the President 6/2020, of October 25).
In addition, it is established that the celebration of ceremonies (weddings and baptisms) are limited to 30% of capacity with a maximum of 30 people.
Exceptionally when these ceremonies take place within the celebration of the Eucharist, the capacity limit for places of worship (50%) will be applied.
The capacity of wakes and funeral processions is limited to 50% in closed spaces, with a maximum of 15 people, provided that the safety distance can be guaranteed.
In open spaces the number of people will be limited to 25 (Order of the Ministry of Health,December 13, 2020). 5 ..- The capacity of the temples of the Diocese of Cartagena is the result of the number of seats that can be occupied by the faithful.
And once the total capacity is established, 50% of it is calculated, always keeping the safety distance between non-cohabitants.
Therefore, the capacity, in terms of the number of people, will depend on the capacity of each temple. 6.- In the Parish of San Lzaro de Alhama de Murcia, after the usual preparatory meeting with parents, and in order to respect the limited capacity, the confirmations have been divided into four shifts, two of which were held last Saturday: one at 11:00 and another at 12:30.
Before starting the second shift, agents of the Local Police of Alhama appeared at the temple and maintained a fluid and cordial dialogue with the priest and the episcopal vicar of the Lorca area, who informed them that the worship activity that was going to take place allowed 50% of the total capacity of the temple according to regional regulations.
On the other hand, the priest, immediately before the celebration began, reminded the faithful of the importance of complying with all health and safety measures, including capacity.Likewise, the episcopal vicar, at the end of each celebration, exhorted the parishioners to avoid making groups outside the temple.
Both celebrations were carried out with all the guarantees and norms that are required for places of worship. 7.- We raise our prayers to the Lord for all those who are suffering the effects of this pandemic, especially for the deceased and their families, for the sick and for those who give their lives from day to day.
