3rd meeting on participatory management of Sierra Espuña trails (10/05/2017)

On May 8, the 3rd meeting of the working group on "PARTICIPATIVE MANAGEMENT OF THE SIERRA ESPUÑA TRAILS" was held in Alhama.

After the last meeting of the Governing Board of the Park, on March 30, Alhama City Council had the invitation to join the working group.

And it did it with the presence of the Councilors of Environment and Sports, in addition to the Municipal Environmental Technician.

This group is made up of different social agents linked to sports activities in the mountains, especially walking and cycling clubs, but also conservation groups, tourist companies, city councils, environmental agents and other groups, in addition to the Director-Conservator of the Park and several members of the Team manager.

Among other issues and after a review of the two previous meetings, one in June and another in September 2016, the data of the evaluation work done to date was presented.

These first works have focused on the places of Fuente Alta, El Paleto and Carmona, with an approximate surface of about 1,000 has.

In the field, environmental agents have studied the state of conservation of traditional trails, new paths and / or open shortcuts and the affection to sensitive nesting and flora areas.

One of the most surprising facts is that the 24 km of traditional trails that have been in existence for more than a century, in the last years we must add the figure of another 10 km.

New open like shortcuts, in most cases following the line of maximum slope, destroying the existing vegetation and even the own trace of the old path.

The management team of the Park showed all attendees images of the serious losses in vegetation and soil that these shortcuts cause, in most cases of very difficult recovery.

At the same time, a review was made of the work carried out in the area of ​​social awareness, for which a manual of good practices for users of sports activities and a work plan for volunteer activities and dissemination among populations is being prepared.

In this sense, the attendees were able to know the advanced study that has been carried out by the management team of the Regional Park of Carrascoy and El Valle.

An intense debate also took place on the new strategies to follow to take the messages of the good use of the paths to all type of users of the roads and trails that run Espuña.

Finally, the group closed the work plan for the coming months, in which this City Council has committed to continue participating.
