The City of Alhama de Murcia has signed a collaboration agreement with Meles, Association for the Study and Conservation of Nature, in order to protect the species white-headed duck (headed duck *) in our municipality.
This agreement, signed by the Mayor of Alhama, Diego Conesa, and President Meles, Francisco Javier Almansa, provides a set of general commitments to improve inter-communication and coordination, especially with the Directorate General of Forestry and Rural Development, he is currently holding the protection of protected natural areas.
Also includes commitments to improve the river ecosystem through activities of diagnosis and assessment of the state of the lakes and their environment, conservation, participation, awareness and dissemination of its values, among others.
The agreement continues the LIFE project, entrusted to the Directorate General of Environment of the Ministry of the Presidency.
It collaborating municipalities of Alhama, Mazarrón and Molina de Segura.
The conditions and commitments between the Ministry and the three municipalities were regulated by a European convention in November 2011. The same was aimed, on the one hand, to channel the activities of dissemination of the project and the Natura 2000 network in schools and social organizations, and secondly, to launch an awareness program and information sectors of the population of the wetlands environment.
The European Union expects this aid the continuity of the actions of conservation, improvement and dissemination of gaps in Salinas, their habitats and their species.
* The white-headed duck is a duck medium-sized, short neck and long tail, and a characteristic blue peak in males in rut.
The species is endangered.
