The General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity.
The continuing loss of biodiversity is very worrying, so it is necessary to make an effort to reduce the rate of loss of biodiversity.
Already in 2001 all the Heads of State of the European Union, the European Council in Gothenburg adopted the target of halting biodiversity loss by 2010, as well as assessing the degree of compliance with this objective, during 2010, coinciding with the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, is expected to establish a new term to halt biodiversity loss.
Conserving biodiversity is essential for many different reasons: ethical, emotional, environmental and economic.
We must not forget that biodiversity underpins our economy and our quality of life, gives us many direct economic benefits are often undervalued, provides a useful set of services that include providing food, fuel, fertile soils, clean air, pure water , and raw materials for the manufacture of clothing and medicines.
They also help regulate climate, control floods and prevent the spread of diseases and pests.
Besides biodiversity has intrinsic value, as it underpins our cultural identity, offers spiritual inspiration and pleasure, and contributes to our mental and physical.
Not forgetting that we have a moral duty to care for our planet and preserve their wealth.
However, the resources that humans use every year, as materials and energy sources and as sinks for waste, has long exceeded the annual production of the Earth, so we've exceeded the limits imposed on the planet and we have done at the expense of biodiversity, future generations and unjust social inequalities.
The motion requests that our City Council in order to take an active part in stopping the loss of biodiversity, taking concrete steps to achieve this objective.
It also intends to use the International Year of Biodiversity to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity.
We propose boost from local measures such as:
Changing consumer habits to reduce consumption of natural resources.
Preparation of audits and strategies to reduce climate change emissions in government buildings.
That develop and implement plans for sustainable mobility, to reduce power mobility needs and facilitating walking or biking.
Promote organic farming and marketing of closeness and season.
Implement urban plans that are committed to urban compaction and reduction of land use.
Also committed to the effective protection of important areas for biodiversity in the municipality.
Promote the proper conservation of Natura 2000 and other protected areas.
